Johnston got his first taste of the EFL after signing on loan for Wigan in January 2021, prior to joining Wanderers following their promotion to League One at the end of that season.
A former Scotland U21 international, Johnston helped Wanderers win the EFL Trophy and reach the League One play-offs in 2023 before missing the 2023/24 campaign with a knee injury.
Having signed a new contract running until June, 2026 he then returned in 2024/25 to reclaim a regular starting spot and move towards 150 appearances for the Whites.
