Wanderers appointed Steven Schumacher as Head Coach at the end of January, 2025.
The then 40-year-old signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Whites to take on his third managerial post.
The Liverpudlian was previously in charge at Plymouth Argyle and Championship club Stoke City.
Originally joining Plymouth from Bury as assistant manager in June, 2019, Schumacher became manager at Home Park in December, 2021 following Ryan Lowe’s move to Preston North End.
The following March he was named League One’s manager of the month but just saw Argyle miss out on the play-offs at the end of the 2021/22 season.
There was no stopping Schumacher’s side in 2022/23, though, as he led Plymouth to promotion as champions with 101 points to earn the League One Manager of the Year accolade following two more monthly awards earlier in the season
The Greens were beaten by Wanderers in the final of the EFL Trophy in 2023 but bounced back to secure promotion and enhance the reputation of Schumacher, who was then targeted by Stoke and became their manager in December, 2023.
He led Stoke to Championship safety with an impressive end to the 2023/24 season but after just five league games of the following campaign was dismissed as the Potters chose a seventh manager in six years.
Schumacher wouldn’t be out of work for long, though, as Wanderers made their move for one of the brightest young managers in the EFL in their quest to try and exit League One.
A bright start with the Whites failed to lead to a play-off place as injuries also took their toll but having weighed up his resources Schumacher really started to make his mark in the summer of 2025 as he re-jigged his squad ready for a first full season in charge at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
As a player, Schumacher started out at Everton and captained England at up to U19 level. A Premier League career was to elude him but as a midfielder he clocked up over 450 games in spells with Bradford, Crewe, Bury, Fleetwood and Stevenage – twice winning promotion and always with half an eye on a coaching career which could yet take him to the top.
