Women | Reserves Claim Derby Cup Final Win Over Wigan

Bolton Wanderers Women's Reserves made it a league and cup double on Sunday afternoon when beating Wigan Athletic's first team 2-1 in the Lancashire League Cup Final.

Following on from their title win in the Premier Division of the Lancashire Women's County League, goals on the day from Flo Rigby and Tegan Higgins was enough to secure a derby victory over Wigan at the home of Euxton Villa.

Despite the afternoon being a stifling hot day, the game started at a decent tempo with both sides looking to gain the early ascendency but it was the Latics who created the first real opportunity through top goalscorer Ellie Cleary.

She did well to skip past her defender and burst into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful strike towards goal, but Tilda Lester did outstandingly well in Wanderers' goal to tip the effort onto the crossbar, before Eva Williams did well to scramble to the rebound to deny Molly Hassall on the rebound.

That triggered Wanderers into action and through the pace and anticipation of Lacey Taylor, almost opened the scoring themselves. The pacy forward did brilliantly to anticipate a loose pass and break into open space and leave defenders in their wake as she drove downfield. She tried to beat Amelia Knowles at the near post with a low effort but the 'keeper was down well to make a smart stop to her right.

Lily Barnes' through-ball looking to find Milla Hodson created another opportunity for the Whites as Knowles in the Wigan goal was chased down by the Wanderers wing-back as she kept the ball alive and left Knowles on the floor.

Milla beat one defender before trying to get her shot away but two defenders denied her the space to shoot towards the open goal and the opportunity was missed.

But it was a game that was end-to-end and Wigan created the biggest chance of the game by far as the ever-dangerous Cleary broke down the right before unselfishly squaring it for Hassall to hit first time from close range, but she somehow missed the target with Lester stranded in a let off for Wanderers.

Grace Grundy then went close for the Whites with a controlled, curling effort from 20 yards which was well-saved by Knowles before Emmanuella Cambell tested the reactions of the Wigan 'keeper once more after being picked out by Taylor inside the area but was denied once more.

As the opening 45 worked itself into added time, there was two goals before half-time whistle and it was Wigan who struck first.

Cleary again was involved as she nipped in front of her defender to get to the ball first at the byline and pulled it back expertly for Hassall to finish to give Wigan the lead.

However, in a matter of seconds, Wanderers responded in stunning fashion. Flo Rigby took one touch from 25 yards, set herself, before unleashing an unstoppable strike into the top corner to ensure that the Whites went into half-time level in a half that had been mostly positive.

Buoyed by her goal at the end of the half, Rigby came out firing for Wanderers in the second half and started to dictate.

First, a defence-splitting ball released Hodson into open-space and allowed her to cut inside and get her shot away but the ball whistled wide of the far post.

Then, the central midfielder did outstandingly well to bounce off the tackle of Nini Dada and break into the area to get her shot away but her effort was always rising and went over the bar.

But Rigby's influence was growing in the game, and she would be involved again as Wanderers took the lead for the first time.

Flo did well to find a yard down the left-hand side to whip a ball in for Tegan Higgins to meet perfectly with her head and she diverted it expertly into the bottom corner to beat sub-keeper Faye Moseley and hand the Whites the ascendency.

Two almost became three for Wanderers as Cambell looked to find the top corner after a deflected Grundy cross fell nicely into her path but Moseley did superbly at full-stretch to deny her and tip the effort around the post.

As the game wore on, chances became limited with the Whites looking to hold on to what they had and almost lost it as Avagrace Hodson thought she has the leveller for Wigan when tapping home after Cleary's initial effort was palmed away by Lester - but despite the huge, ongoing celebrations from the Latics, the flag was up for offside and Wigan were denied.

Wigan threw everything at Wanderers to try and draw themselves level with Cleary carving out one more chance for herself inside the area, but she dragged the effort wide of the post.

With that, Wanderers' Reserves were able to see out the game and claim the Lancashire League Cup to claim a well-earned double to cap a superb season.
