Women | Megan Campbell Joins As Assistant Coach

Megan Campbell

Bolton Wanderers Women is delighted to announce the appointment of Republic of Ireland international Megan Campbell as Assistant Coach.

The former Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton and London City Lionesses defender - who carries years of top flight experience in the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship - links up with Wanderers ahead of the new campaign and joins Myles Smith’s backroom staff as they make the step up to Tier 5 of the pyramid.

Working alongside Tom Cunniff as joint Assistant Coach - with Tom also stepping up into a new role for 2025/26 after his outstanding work last season - Megan will combine her coaching commitments with the Whites alongside her playing career elsewhere.

With over 55 caps at international level with the Republic of Ireland, the Drogheda-born central defender also carries a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, as well as Social Science degree, after earning a scholarship with Florida State Seminoles back in 2013.

Megan was named in the ACC All-Academic Team on two occasions for her performances in the States, with the University winning the NCAA Championship for the first time.

Returning from the States following her studies to kickstart her career in England, Megan also boasts a domestic treble to her name during her time with Manchester City, assisting twice in the Citizen’s FA Cup Final win over Birmingham City at Wembley in 2017.

Spells at Liverpool, Everton and London City Lionesses followed for Megan in a hugely successful career, winning the Women’s Championship on two occasions, as she now takes the next step in her footballing journey in a coaching capacity at the club.

Megan will link up with Wanderers Women ahead of the season opener against Darwen on Sunday afternoon, as they look to kickstart their season in positive fashion on the road.

On joining Wanderers Women as Assistant Coach, Megan said: “I am delighted to be given this opportunity at Bolton Wanderers Football Club, this is a special club with a rich history in football.

“The support within and around the Women’s game is incredible, and the Club have shown their backing in having a very ambitious team that wants to progress through the pyramid.

“The journey that this Women’s team is on, with the full backing from Sharon Brittan and the board - as well as the relationship I have built with Myles (Smith) over many years through our time in the WSL - is the reason that I was so attracted to the role.

“I hope that my knowledge and experience within the game can help develop our squad not only as players, but more importantly as people.

“I am ambitious within my own coaching journey to develop as much as I can. Working alongside Myles and the rest of the staff here, I know that I will continue to grow as a coach.

“I am privileged that my first coaching appointment is with Bolton Wanderers and I’m really looking forward to the season ahead and beyond.”

Myles Smith, Women’s Team Manager, said: “I am thrilled to welcome Megan to our coaching team at Wanderers Women.

“Her pedigree and experience is there for all to see, and I have no doubts that she will excel and improve our coaching team in helping to achieve our goals.

“We conducted a thorough process when recruiting for this role, and when Megan expressed her interest for the position - given our previous relationship that stretches back years - it felt like the perfect fit.”
