Graham Cunliffe: 1936-2025

Graham Cunliffe

All at Bolton Wanderers are saddened to hear of the passing of former player Graham Cunliffe.

Cunliffe, who spent almost a decade as a player with the Whites after signing in 1955, passed away last weekend at the age of 89.

A wing-half, Hindley-born Cunliffe started his working life as a miner before joining Wanderers and making his first team debut two years later in 1957.

He went on to play a total of 33 times for the Whites, including two appearances in the early stages of the FA Cup run which saw Wanderers lift the trophy for a fourth time in 1958.

His best run of games saw him start nine consecutive matches at the end of the 1959/60 season to help Wanderers finish sixth in the top flight of English football.

Cunliffe then made eight more First Division appearances and 12 in total the following season before leaving Burnden Park in 1964 to join Rochdale.

A resident of Wigan all his life, Cunliffe subsequently ran a post office in Lower Ince and last season was a guest of Wanderers to see his former team in action.

The thoughts of everyone at Wanderers are with Graham’s family and friends.
