Cissoko Wings Into Wanderers

Ibrahim Cissoko signing

Wanderers have again swooped to strengthen their squad with winger Ibrahim Cissoko jetting in to add some continental flair.

Cissoko has joined the Whites on a season-long loan from French Ligue 1 Toulouse – subject to international clearance and FA approval – with the option to make the move permanent.

The 22-year-old has played top-flight football in France and the Netherlands, where he started his career at hometown club NEC Nijmegen and made 30 Eredivisie appearances between 2022-23.

And after getting a sample of English football during loan spells last season at Championship clubs Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday, the exciting wideman – predominantly left-sided but capable of operating on either flank – is eager for more after becoming Wanderers’ 12th signing of a highly productive summer.

“I'm really glad to be here, really happy,” said Cissoko, who will wear squad number 20 in Steven Schumacher’s squad. “I really wanted to go back to England. I'm glad that everything worked out in the end and I can't wait to start.

“I've tasted the Championship and I really like it.  For attacking players, I think it's a really good platform to show yourself. I really enjoyed it. That's why I love England now.

“I know this club has big ambitions as well, like myself, and I have full confidence that we will do well.  I'm really hungry and I'm ready for everything. You guys will see (the best of) me, for sure.”

Cissoko’s appetite for life at Wanderers was further whetted by watching last Saturday’s impressive 2-0 win over Plymouth and the former Netherlands U21 international – who has been called up at senior level by Guinea – was due to see the Whites take on another former club in Wednesday after putting pen to paper ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup tie against the Owls.

“I watched the game against Plymouth and I could see that the wingers are really involved and really get into 1 v 1s a lot. That's also what the coach told me, so I know that this fit is good for me,” added Cissoko, who adds to Wanderers’ impressive roster of wide players following the signings earlier this summer of Amario Cozier-Duberry, Thierry Gale and Charlie Warren.

“Not only that, I want to contribute goals and assist as well. That's what I'm going to do this season, for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing the fans. I saw it the other day against Plymouth, so I know the fans will be here and, for me, the stadium is really important.

"When you play in a nice stadium, it gives you a good feeling. When I see this, it's a Premier League standard for me, so it's really top.”
